Meet Jason the Otter

Jason the Otter is quite a character! Scientifically named Aonyx cinereus, the Asian Small-clawed Otter is one of the smallest otter species, known for their dexterity and playfulness. These otters use their small claws to handle and manipulate objects and food, and are highly social animals, often engaging in group activities.

As Jason aged, he began to show signs of arthritis, a common condition in otters that can significantly impact their quality of life. Recognizing his discomfort, his veterinary team sought effective pain management solutions tailored to her needs.

Addressing Jason's Health Needs

Jason suffers from Degenerative Joint Disease (known to humans as Arthritis), which is a chronic condition that causes joint inflammation, pain, swelling, and limited movement. Through Bare Compounding Pharmacy, Jason's veterinary team was able to administer Tramadol compounded in tasty tuna-flavored OroGel, one of the natural, dye-free, bases made at Bare.

Jason and his species have unfortunately become vulnerable to extinction according to IUCN Red List of Threatened Species. Asian Small-clawed Otters have undergone a dramatic decline in China. In Cambodia, they are only found near Virachey National Park. Given the extent of loss of habitat that is occurring in south and southeast Asia and the intensity of poaching the reduction in population has been observed in many parts of its range. Massive destruction of wetland forests in Indonesia has reduced the species’ habitat.

How You Can Help Jason

Jason often participates in educational programs where visitors can learn about his species, their habitat, diet, and their behaviors. Here are two simple ways to help Jason and his family's fight against extinction.

  • Reduce, reuse and recycle — in that order! Cut back on single-use goods, and find creative ways to reuse products at the end of their life cycle. Choose recycling over trash when possible.
  • Share this information of Jason with others. Simply raising awareness about his species and their struggles can contribute to their overall protection.
